Three quarters of the energy contracts we’ve looked at have an auto-rollover clause that resets the customer onto market default rates the day the contract ends. If you’re inside the 90-day notice window, you’re paying for it right now.
What to do this week
- Find your latest electricity bill. The contract end date is on it — usually in small print top-right.
- If you’re inside 90 days of that date, send your retailer this email today:
Hi, please email me confirmation of (a) the exact end date of our current contract, (b) the default tariff that will apply if we don’t renew, and (c) all renewal offers currently available for our account. Thanks.
Their first counter-offer is almost always lower than the default rollover rate, and lower still if you mention you’ve received offers from two competitors.
Who’s sharpest right now
For hospitality-specific rates, Origin Business and Powershop have been the most competitive on small-business electricity contracts in 2026. Get at least two quotes before signing.
